Houston ISD Implements Teacher Cuts Amid Enrollment Decline

The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has announced significant staffing changes for the 2025–26 school year, resulting in the elimination of 160 teacher positions and the reassignment of 232 others. These adjustments are part of the district’s annual “leveling” process, aimed at aligning staffing levels with student enrollment numbers. The decision follows projections indicating a 6,500-student decline, approximately a 4% decrease, in HISD’s student population.

Impacted Schools and Staffing Changes

The staffing adjustments have affected approximately 120 schools across the district. Clifton Middle School experienced the highest number of teacher reassignments, with six staff members moved to different positions. Revere Middle School saw the most teacher cuts, with eight positions eliminated. In addition to the teacher cuts, 54 staff members were also laid off. The district emphasized that the layoffs primarily targeted uncertified teachers and those with low performance ratings.

Broader Context and Community Response

This move is part of a broader trend of enrollment declines in HISD, which has experienced an average annual decrease of 4% since the state assumed control of the district. The most recent enrollment data, expected to be released after the October student count, will provide a clearer picture of the current situation. Community members and educators have expressed concern over the impact of these staffing changes on the quality of education and the stability of the school environment.

Looking Ahead

HISD officials have stated that further staffing adjustments may be necessary if enrollment continues to decline. The district is committed to maintaining educational standards and ensuring that resources are allocated effectively to meet the needs of students. Ongoing communication with the community and stakeholders will be essential as the district navigates these challenges.
